The word Rei means "higher power" or "God's wisdom" and the word Ki means "life force energy." So, the word "Reiki" essentially translates to "spiritually guided life force energy." It is a method of "energy healing" that was established by Mikao Usui in Japan.
At the heart of Reiki is the core belief that life force energy flows through us all and is what causes us to be alive. Cultures around the world have different names for this energy, such as Qi, Prana and Mana.
Another core belief is that, when our life force energy is low, we feel sick, tired, irritable and/or stressed out. When our life force energy is high, we feel good, content, healthy and energetic.
Reiki practitioners channel life force energy and send it to their client through energy centres in the palms of their hands. Receiving a Reiki treatment should help you relax and relieve stress and support your body's natural ability to recovery from mental and physical ailments.
It is important to point out that Reiki treatment does not replace treatment from a doctor or mental health professional and no Reiki practitioner should tell it does.
Anyone can access life force energy, and anyone can channel it as a Reiki practitioner by becoming attuned by a Master-level Reiki practitioner.
